JOIN OUR TEAM

Onpoint Health Data is a dynamic, fast growing nonprofit company located in Portland, Maine committed to delivering independent, reliable, and insightful data solutions to clients nationwide. If you are a motivated self-starter looking for the opportunity to work with emerging technologies and a collaborative, energetic team, Onpoint would be a perfect fit.

SUMMARY

This internship provides the opportunity to work with a group of talented engineers and healthcare data experts building industry leading applications and leveraging the latest technologies to tackle complex data management problems. As an intern, you will work closely with those responsible for components at various points within the software development life cycle of Onpoint’s Claims Data Manager (CDM) system. CDM is a cloud-based web application that leverages big data technologies to transform, and make accessible, massive amounts of healthcare data to Onpoint staff, Onpoint’s clients, and researchers around the country. Over the course of 8-10 weeks, an intern will have an excellent opportunity to contribute to CDM in a design, quality assurance and/or development capacity, while beginning to acquire a diverse skillset including SQL and Java. As a cloud-based application, an intern will also become familiar and comfortable working within an Amazon Web Services (AWS) framework.  The successful candidate will bring strong analytic and problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn alongside a strong development team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with a mentor to identify an area of need for Onpoint within the first two weeks of the internship.
  • Participate in a long-term project related to this area of focus, leveraging a SQL, Java, and/or Web Application skillset within the AWS environment.
  • Hit project deadlines as agreed upon during the initial planning phase, while closely following project specifications and clearly communicating progress and status in both verbal and written form.
  • Present findings to the Information Services team at the conclusion of the internship.

ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

  • Research and understand the overall dataflow and structure within Onpoint, from data intake to client delivery, to help aid in project work.
  • Provide quality assurance to newly developed CDM functionality, often leveraging Postman for API testing, while working closely with the Data Intake team
  • Become comfortable working within an Agile methodology leveraging JIRA to track task progress.
  • Participate in daily scrums as well as brainstorming and architecture discussions as an introduction to team dynamics and how ideas move from design to implementation as part of the software life cycle.

 OTHER

  • Understand the value that Onpoint places on maintaining the confidentiality and integrity of our corporate and client data and meet applicable privacy and security compliance requirements
  • Ensure that Onpoint and client data is accessed, handled, processed, transmitted, disclosed, and stored according to operational and IT policies and procedures
  • Immediately report any suspected or actual violation of privacy and security policies or unauthorized access or disclosure of Onpoint or client data
  • Understand that compliance with all privacy and security policies, laws, and regulations is part of each employee's annual performance evaluation
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures as outlined in the Onpoint Health Data Employee Handbook
  • Perform all other duties as assigned and actively seek opportunities to learn and contribute

QUALIFICATIONS

  • University-level coursework in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a related field.
  • Experience or academic training with one or more of these areas is preferred:
    • Application development using Java and SQL
    • Databases and complex data structures
    • AWS (EMR, Athena, Redshift, Lambda), Hadoop, and SparkSQL
    • Web App development technologies and frameworks such as Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, Spring, and React
  • Strong analytic and problem-solving skills with an attention for detail.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new technologies quickly and a curiosity to probe further into data and process challenges.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and time-management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work on-site in our Portland office 2-3 days per week
